If you find yourself visiting the quintessential Colorado town of Fort Collins, otherwise referred to as “Foco” by the locals, there’s a high probability that you will fall in love with its unparalleled charm, lively energy, and expansive gastronomy.

I speak from personal experience, as my husband and I first moved to Foco for work back in October 2021 and quickly created a bucket list of must-try restaurants in the area. All of my top recommendations provided below have been frequented by us personally and consist of what I strongly believe are the 35 best restaurants in Fort Collins, while satisfying an assortment of preferences and occasions.

Top Places to Eat in Old Town Fort Collins

The best way to describe Old Town Fort Collins is that it feels as though you’ve stepped out of real life and into a movie, set in an idyllic small town. To such a degree that Harper Goff, later termed as Disney’s second “Imagineer”, drew from his childhood experiences in Fort Collins as the inspiration when designing and creating Main Street USA for California’s Disneyland, alongside the infamous Walt Disney.

Old Town Square Fort Collins

Though Old Town continues to grow and adapt to the present, it still maintains its historic architectural style, embracing a late-Victorian flair. It truly is an enjoyable experience wandering the two-story brick building lined, colorfully landscaped streets while searching for somewhere scrumptious to eat.

1. Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar Fort Collins

Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar

$$$ | Seafood | 123 N College Ave, Fort Collins, CO 80524 | jaxfishhouse.com

Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar reigns supreme in my book for so many reasons. With fresh and sustainably sourced seafood brought into the restaurant seven days a week, you might be convinced that you are dining on the coast while taking your first bite.

Foco residents agree that this hot spot’s popularity is no secret, which makes advanced reservations a necessity on most nights. Seating at the oval-shaped oyster bar is first come first serve, so you may get lucky as a walk-in if you’re willing to wait a bit. The bar is definitely my husband and I’s preferred spot to enjoy some oysters and tapas to share.

Must Try Dish: Fried New England Calamari

2. The Café at Ginger and Baker

Ginger and Baker

$$ | American | 359 Linden St, Fort Collins, CO 80524 | gingerandbaker.com/the-cafe

The historic Ginger and Baker building was once a thriving a feed mill in the early 1900s. Beginning in 2014, it was carefully restored to the impressive food mecca that stands today. Home to two different restaurants, a bakery, a country-style kitchen / home goods store, and hands-on teaching kitchen, this is a must-see stop for both in and out of towners.

The Café restaurant is located on the main level and offers a seasonally rotating menu of classic comfort food with some modern twists. Serving up breakfast all day, in addition to a variety of hearty lunch and dinner menu options, your choices are not limited. Dining here emulates the feeling of “small-town hospitality” plus the menus are printed on newspaper, which is one of my personal favorite touches.

3. Blue Agave Grill

Blue Agave Grill

$$$ | Mexican | 201 S College Ave, Fort Collins, CO 80524 | blueagavegrillcolorado.com

Blue Agave Grill is not your traditional Mexican restaurant. It offers an upscale dining experience with a contemporary spin on Southwestern cuisine. This restaurant is situated beneath the Museum on Art Fort Collins, but boasts a spacious interior and intimate patio area with seasonal fire pit tables.

They provide extensive tequila and margarita options on their menu, including flights of either if you’re feeling a bit indecisive. You can also choose from a selection of to-go margs with a meal for carry out, but I would definitely recommend the experience of dining in.

Gaku Ramen Fort Collins

Fort Collins is only the second location for Gaku Ramen that opened in July 2023. The original restaurant can be found near another college campus in Burlington, VT. The owners’ vision for this restaurant was to make authentic ramen and Japanese cuisine accessible for college students. Choosing another bustling college town like Foco to open its second restaurant was a no-brainer.

6. Social

Social

$$ | Speakeasy | 1 Old Town Square #7, Fort Collins, CO 80524 | socialfortcollins.com

Social may be coined as Fort Collin’s underground speakeasy lounge, but it is both well-known and well-loved by many. This industrial and moody themed bar is recognized for its creative cocktails, charcuterie, sharable plates, and desserts.

Opening at 4PM daily, it makes for a great happy hour or late-night destination. Although quite larger inside than you might expect of a speakeasy, they do reach capacity on most Friday and Saturday evenings causing a line to form along the cobble stone streets above the entrance.

Whether you are a sushi connoisseur or wanting to try it for the first time, Nimo’s is the spot for you. The outside of this restaurant is very unassuming, but the interior has such a quaint and authentic feel. They are also the only Japanese eatery in Fort Collins both owned and operated by Japanese.

I recommend sitting at the sushi bar (first come first serve) if dining alone or with a small party to get the full experience of watching Nimo himself carefully hand-craft each roll. Each dish is truly a work of art. Otherwise, I would highly advise calling ahead for a reservation, as there are a limited number of tables and it’s no secret to locals just how good it is.

$$ | Indian | 1611 S College Ave #100, Fort Collins, CO 80525 | bawarchifortcollins.com

I realized that Bawarchi Biryanis is actually a chain after my first dining experience there, but I’m happy to report that did not take away from the quality of dishes that they prepared for us.

The menu can feel overwhelming if you’re not familiar with ordering Indian cuisine, however, they break it down very simply and even denote the level of spice in each dish. This meal is best enjoyed with a large group via family-style so you have the chance to try a little bit of everything.
